The name macropod is derived from the Greek words macro, meaning large, and pod, meaning foot.
Their distinguishing features include a triangular body shape, prominent hind legs and feet, and disproportionately small front limbs and a long, strong tail for balance.
Macropods are also herbivorous, meaning they love to snack on vegetation, like leaves, grass, and vegetables.
Which brings us to today's wild wonder.
This one comes from Ethan, a patient at Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane, Australia.
And Ethan would like to know... An excellent question, Ethan, but, first, let's rewind for a second.
What is a quokka?
Quokkas are one of the most adorable native marsupials in Australia.
Well, in my opinion, at least.
They have the sweetest facial expressions and always seem to be wearing a cheeky little grin.
They are only small creatures, and weigh about as much as a house cat.
They have beautiful, soft brown fur, a round nose surrounded by whiskers, and short round ears perched on the top of their heads.
But let's see if we can identify any of those macropod features.
Hm, alright, so their bodies are triangular in shape, just like a kangaroo.
They have a long, strong tail to help them balance whilst they get around.
And have a look at the size of the back legs, compared to the front limbs.
They are disproportionate.
Just like the macropods we saw earlier, the back legs are much larger and the front limbs are a lot shorter.
What about their diet?
Well, by the looks of it, quokkas love to eat leaves and vegetables, just like the other macropods.
So, I think we may have gotten to the bottom of this wild wonder.
Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Ethan?
So, the answer to your question, Ethan, is yes, quokkas are macropods, just like kangaroos.
Thank you for your wild wonder.
I'm curious now -- how many more marsupials are macropods?
See if you can think of any other animals that might fit into the macropod family.
